Remember the beginning of “Northern Exposure” tv show that had a moose ambling through the center of the small Alaskan town? Well, they don’t have anything on us! My last post showed my beautiful backyard blooming out my back door, but it has been eaten by a deer that has taken residence somewhere behind my house. I live in town! It has been known for some time that some less-than-nature-savvy person near the hospital (a block from me) has been feeding the deer. This has caused a group of five or six to always be in town, grazing the tops of our tulips and hosta, but usually near the street, NOT MY BACK DOOR! As I was getting ready to go to work at 4:30 yesterday afternoon at the Cabbage Shed, I saw a deer standing at the back of my yard just staring at me. I sicked my Welsh Corgi, Fixit, on it to run it out of the yard and gardens. It just stared at us like “you have got to be kidding”! Finally it turned and ran down the alley behind, with Fixit yapping at his heels. I came home at 11:30, let Fixit out the back door, and there it is again!!! Fixit ran him/her off again. Burt and I were having coffee on the patio this morning, and the same lone deer sauntered beside our yard to the road, stopping traffic on the street out front as if there was a designated cross walk for ambling deer!
I love animals as much as anyone, but am a little worn-out with my organic veggies and flowers being taken by the deer “welfare” program. But wait ’til you hear the rest of the story. …………………
Apparently last Sunday night, so the story goes, the police got a call about a vagrant or suspicious person hanging about the High School area. A sherriff’s deputy responded, and spotted a black bear! He video taped it, and followed it to the hospital (remember, one block from my house), where it did what any respectable bear would do, and dumpster dived. Then it continued to Michigan Ave., on the bluffs of Lake Michigan and disappeared down the dunes to the lake.
Unfortunately, I do not at this time have any pertinent pictures to share, as I have been too busy trying to save my back door gardens, then to grab my camera in the process. But just to make me feel better, when I rounded the Betsie Bay on my way to work, a beautiful and majestic Bald Eagle was perched close to the road on a stump! I got a long look at it before it flew down the bay, showing it’s startling white tail.
Yup, “Wild Kingdom” has nothing on me! Till next time……Julie
What a crazy story! From deer to bears to eagles! Seriously the wild kingdom seems to indeed not have anything on you! Talked to grandma today…….even under the weather she sounds so much the same. Love you!

Wow, you couldn’t have made that one up! Your deer have obviously become too jaded. Maybe it could teach me how to sneak into neighbor’s yards and steal cuttings of plants I’ve been lusting after.
